November 9th is known as Kristallnacht – the night of broken glass. The massive pogrom on November 9, 1938 marks when the forces of anti-Semitism grew strong enough to cause the Shoah. The Temple Israel Shoah Remembrance Committee invites you to commemorate Kristallnacht as we continue to hear witness from survivors.
Join us for lunch, conversation, and exploration of our collective history as we find new ways to remember the past.

Over the past few years, the Kristallnacht commemoration has examined interesting and innovative approaches to remembering the Shoah. Transferring memories to new generations is essential to remembering the holocaust.

At this year’s commemoration we will feature the “Names Not Numbers” program. The program was recently developed and implemented at Great Neck North High School. Three survivors were interviewed by students at Great Neck North. TIGN and Committee member Manny Korman was one of the survivors who was interviewed.
“Names, Not Numbers,” a Holocaust Oral History Film Documentary program, transforms the traditional study of the events of the Holocaust in Europe into an experiential project involving the actual eyewitnesses to those events – the survivors and World War II veterans. This moves beyond the traditional classroom walls and creates an interactive and empowering educational lesson. Through this unique program, students learn first-hand about the Holocaust by making their own professional documentary. They themselves conduct oral history interviews. They themselves film and edit personal testimonies. They themselves form intergenerational connections and become the “witnesses to the witnesses.”
